Exam Questions
1) Explain what the term 'readership' means (2)
- Readership is a calculation based upon the average number of people who read an individual copy of the publication.
2) Analysing the data about 'The Sun' and 'Daily Mail' newspapers, describe two differences in terms of their target audience (4)
- One difference in terms of The Sun's and Daily Mail's target audience, is that The Sun's has a lower percentage of readers in the ABC1 category, than Daily Mail. This could be due to people in that grade being of a middle class and more professional jobs, therefore they may not wish to read a tabloid due to the informal, gossip style.
- Another difference in terms of The Sun's and Daily Mail's target audience, is that The Sun's has a higher percentage of men readers than Daily Mail. This could be due to men being more interested sport and football which is highly used in this tabloid, as well as the Male Gaze which is highly seen in The Sun and their page 3 articles.
3) From your knowledge of demographics describe and the type of content that might feature in two newspapers of your choice from the data provided
- The Guardian is seen to have more readers in the ABC1 category, than the C2DE category. This could inform us that The Guardian is filled with formal, national situations such as political and culture - therefore being read by people in the middle class and with professional jobs.
- The Daily Telegraph has a higher percentage of readers that are 35+. This shows that this broadsheet includes articles that are more relevant and interesting to older adults, such as politics and quality led articles.
